Barnes Grinding and Polishing Machine
The Barnes grinding and polishing machine used velocipede motion and a tractor seat to provide the operator with a comfortable and efficient grinding station. It ran grinding, buffing, or polishing wheels up to 6 inches in diameter, but the wheels were available as an option only - no wheels where included with the machine. 2 types of this machine are known:

  • Type 1 was an attachment for the #2 scroll saw. This type was produced from 1877 to 1886, and utilized the round belt.
  • Type 2 was a dedicated grinding machine, like the type 2 former. In fact, it was built on the type 2 former frame and used the flat perforated belt patented by Barnes in 1886. It was made from 1886 to 1907, when it was apparently discontinued. There are very few of this type known extant.

The machine weighed 85 pounds (115 pounds boxed), and sold for $18.00. A wide variety of emery wheels were sold by Barnes, ranging in price from 50 cents for a 3 inch diameter wheel 1/4 inch in thickness to $11.75 for a 10 inch diameter wheel 2 inches in thickness (these larger wheels would not fit the Barnes machine, obviously).
