Barnes #5 Scroll Saw
This saw uses the same base as the #4 saw (in fact, the only known example has a number 4 cast in the base). The scroll saw head and table of this machine is the same as the more common #6 scroll saw, but bears a #5 in the castings.

Very little is known about this elusive saw. No patent records exist for it as a separate model, and no catalog pictures the #5. It uses the velocipede crankshaft with two offset pedals under the base. Pedaling caused the shaft to rotate, driving a flywheel that in turn drove the power belt (apparently of the round variety). The patent for this mechanism was issued on September 3, 1878. Apparently this model was manufactured in 1879 only. At least 2 examples are known, both with castings much fancier than the normal Barnes castings.
