Barnes #4 Velocipede Walking Arm Saw
Outside of the patent records, little of this saw is known. This machine incorporated the #3 scroll saw head with a four-legged base similar to a sewing machine base rather than the tripod base of a #1. It was actuated by a two-pedal velocipede device centered between the legs. (patented in 1878). This, the #3 saw, and the #5 saw seem to be transitional models, blending features of saws that came before and after them. This saw was made in 1878 only. No catalog drawings are known, so the illustration in Figure 4 is from the patent records. Rumors of this saw persist, but so far none has been seen by the authors.
