Barnes #1 Spring Stick Wood Lathe
Produced from 1874 to 1880, the #1 wood lathe was driven by a small treadle and spring stick mechanism, using a ratchet like the first type of Barnes combination saw. The ratchet mechanism allowed the lathe to turn in only the forward direction. It had a light cast iron frame, and came with headstock, tool rest, and tailstock. The swing was 9-3/4 inches, and the lathe could handle work 30 inches long. The #1 lathe weighed 85 pounds (145 pounds boxed), and sold for $35.00. This lathe was apparently discontinued after the introduction of the #3 wood lathe.

This lathe used the complex and unusual multiple belt drive system pioneered on the first type #7. The only known example has a flat unperforated belt, although catalog pictures always show round belts. This is the only Barnes machine known to use an unperforated flat belt.
