Rules
Rules hold a special fascination for collectors -- their aren't
many users of these old folding rules left. Rules are made of exotic materials such
as Turkish boxwood, African ivory, and German Silver, much of which just isn't available
any more today. Rules, with their highly precise graduations, are a miracle of production
-- the earliest ones were hand marked by someone with the patience of Job. Rules were
used to measure distance, of course, but some also had additional scales marked on
them to measure the volume of casks, the amount of timber in a log, logorithms, or
other engineering data. Rules can be very small or very large in size.

This super rare, unique item was featured in the "Art of Fine Tools", the coffee-table picture book displaying the most artistic tools the author could find. This is the rule pictured in the book. About 12 inches long, ivory base with a gold gilt frieze pattern carved in the top, showing mythological beasts. A fantastic work of art, and a top collector piece.

Rare 1-foot 4 Ivory and German Silver fold rule, made by T&H Doublet in Moorgate,
St. Bank. These small ivory rules are exceedingly scarce as they were so easily lost.
This one is clean, folds tight, and is in very nice shape.
