Planes

Planes are my favorite handheld woodworking tool. Planes are essential to the woodworking process (they are used to create flat surfaces on the wood), and there are so many different styles, sizes, and adjusting mechanisms that it is very easy to quickly build a plane collection. You'll find the late nineteenth century littered with the patents of failed planemakers -- all of which makes their study that much more interesting. Before the planemakers started patenting things and making things with cast iron and steel, they were busy making all sorts of wooden planes which are also quite interesting to collect. Because of their popularity, there are several reference books published about planes.

  • Your satisfaction is guaranteed with all tools. See my Ordering page for details.
  • All prices are in US dollars, and shipping for 1 or more tools in the continental USA is just $10 for the entire order; additional postage for other locales is billed at cost.

  • I try to buy only the best condition tools normally available, and you'll see many tools graded highly below. In the few cases where I say "user condition", that means the plane is complete and unbroken but the finishes are less than 80%, or a hang hole has been drilled in the plane, or some other such defect that does not detract from usability.
